Atwinzeris like a magnifiedtwinfin sort to speak. Invented in the late 80’s, it does have a clear theoretical aspect to it: the smaller fins open the water before the upright fins run through it. By doing so the main fin focuses in pivoting, instead of pivoting and also holding the board in the water. This aspect offers a more performance angle of attack while reducing the probability of spinning out.
“I was super excited with the firstTwinzerI ever shaped” says Adrian. “That’s why I have been shaping a lot more of these ever since. Progressive changes have been put to test by my friends Ander Mendiguren (@andermendiguren), Kike Vila Pelayo (@kikevilapelayo) and myself just to name a few. Kike still holds the 1st version of that magicTwinzerbut I feel that the latest designs are really on point”.
TheTwinzeris a standard twinny with two smaller fins sitting just forward and towards the rail of each larger fin. And for these particular batch, Adrian has glassed them with 4oz fiberglass in the bottom and two layers of 4oz fiberglass on top. They feel light and sweet, with the magic of a shape that has been handshaped from start to finish.
Adrian reckons that he has been greatly inspired by surfer/shaper Derrick Disney (@gado_gadooo). “I love watching him surf. His classic lines and wide archs are matched with critical surf in the pocket, and that’s what I try to achieve with my design: enjoying the fast glide of an original fish while being performance”.
Heavily supported by the Bizkaia core surfing community in The Basque country, Adrian Lopez is a shaper from Sopelana who started building surfboards in 2012. At Pukas Surf Shop we keep thriving on showcasing the shapes and designs from local and international shapers. Adrokultura feels home, and we like it. As mentioned previously, he shaped his first board in 2012 for a friend. It was a Mini Simmons and since then, he has done quite some boards bit without any continuity or compromiseto the job in a long term.
It was not until November 2019 that he decided to dedicate himself to shaping surfboards.Since the last ones he made were getting better and better, people and friends who tried them were happy and enjoyed them… Things were working quite well so he decided to giveshaping surfboards a real chance.
“I like to make boards that motivate me to surf, that can work on the beach where you surf or on the waves that are close to home. I’m lucky that I’ve been surfing all my life which also makes me meet a lot of people. Those people are motivated by the fact that you make their surfboards, and feel even more motivated to surf them if they know that have been shaped by you, a friend as well. That’s what keeps my fire goingwhen it comes to shapingsurfboards, while learning and improving in the process.”Adrian Lopez.
