Adrian has been shaping Sputniks to navigate barreling waves and draw speedy lines on them. His first attempton shaping a Sputnik was a few years back on a trip to Morocco with surfing Safi in mind. Safi is strong, powerful and one of the best heavy barreling sand points in Morocco. The board worked and Adrian kept working on thedesign.
His first Sputnik had the rails very parallel which made it work great in bigger, more pushy waves. Surfing barrels and solid point breaks became an absolute pleasure and he loved to surf it in Safi and elsewhere. So why change it? Well, it was hard to move it in softer conditions says Adrian. So he started working, testing and changing some features of the board to make it more user-friendly as he likes to say.
During the process he wanted to maintain the board’s sharpness and power so he made the outline rounder but kept the board narrow to make it easy to go from rail to rail without loosing the grip of the board. With speed and hold in big waves locked in, he has been shaping the bottom with a more pronounced rocker combined with a V concave to make it easier to pivot the board for manoeuvres.
Back at home (Sopelana, Spain) Txaber Garminde (@txabba_weepah) and lots of his peers have been rooting for this model from the very beginning. Mundaka? Sputnik please. A solid, hollow and imposing Mundaka? Sputnik please.
The Sputnik has had years of development and it has been shaped in sizes that range from 56 to 76. You can only think of the variety of feedback Adrian had on this design. This shape will carry you through your favourite conditions with speed, power and solidness. These boards are glassed in 4oz/6oz/4oz to keep them light and to make sure that the board doesnt get too hard to turn.
Heavily supported by the Bizkaia core surfing community in The Basque country, Adrian Lopez is a shaper from Sopelana who started building surfboards in 2012. As mentioned previously, he shaped his first board in 2012 for a friend. It was a Mini Simmons and since then, he has done quite some boards bit without any continuity or compromiseto the job in a long term.
It was not until November 2019 that he decided to dedicate himself to shaping surfboards.Since the last ones he made were getting better and better, people and friends who tried them were happy and enjoyed them… Things were working quite well so he decided to giveshaping surfboards a real chance.
“I like to make boards that motivate me to surf, that can work on the beach where you surf or on the waves that are close to home. I’m lucky that I’ve been surfing all my life which also makes me meet a lot of people. Those people are motivated by the fact that you make their surfboards, and feel even more motivated to surf them if they know that have been shaped by you, a friend as well. That’s what keeps my fire goingwhen it comes to shapingsurfboards, while learning and improving in the process.”Adrian Lopez.
